Synopsis of the play

How are we looking at the text?

A group of performers is narrating the whole story throughout the play. The whole story happens at Khowab Danga (the dreamland) where some hungry students come for school tour and a magic spell forces them to do ridiculous behaviour. The king of the dreamland tries to spread his charm through his pet urchin so that the school boys could easily devour the food from the girls, what they rejected earlier. Meanwhile, with the magic spell of the king, the Clown becomes a donkey and the king lures his queen to marry it. But, when the magic spell gets over, the queen, disillusioned, understood what wrong she has done. And so to the school kids. After that, all live happily ever after.
Excepts the clown. He could not get out of the charm. Being ‘an ass’ he still wants to reign the dreamland. Then his fellow folk actors come there to take him back to their group. The play ends with a severe dilemma that if it is a real world the clown [or we, simultaneously] live in.

Director's Note

Uniqueness of this Project

Why are we doing this?

Shakespeare is going to be explored for children through certain folk arts of the country. Simultaneously, it will connect Indian folk forms with the genius of Shakespeare to find a new & fresh language for Bengali Theatre. It will help discover and develop a new musical orientation for theatre through folk arts, and also
find them out of Shakespeare.

The Target

Why for Children?

We think children are the most essential part of our society. But every time they are restricted to life. What they find as Shakespeare in their syllabi can neither make a distinct sense for the Bard, nor for theatre. It is a complete wrong way how Shakespeare has been introduced to them.
Moreover, those syllabi are ignorant of the Indian Folk Culture which have major roles in creating our history and also in our transforming sociology. But our children have the rights to know them, to explore them, to their own realm in them. So, being a parallel education process, as we believe it is, theatre takes the responsibility to open an avenue of learning through entertainment.
And this process helps not only children, but also their elder counterpart grow to the great extent of creativity.
