Synopsis of the play

The Police Station of Nischintipur is now suffering from the dearth of crime as Peace and Non-violence prevail there to make Life in proper law and order. To explain the reason of it, the centurion old man, Gopal walks through his down memory lane and the story goes thus:

Once upon a time there lived a courageous Police Officer in our British-ruled India who believed in the strength of Truth and Non-violence. Bidhan Chandra Pakrashi, eminent as Bidhu Daroga had a unique power to eliminate ill habits from Human race. Coming to Nischintipur village, he gloriously announced to make a tiger and a cow to drink water from the same pond simultaneously. The challenged arose and he won the game. Consequently, all malpractices and frailty took refuge in elsewhere.

Henceforth, events had gone as following: the cow befriended the tiger; leaving the traditional occupation, dreadful dacoits like Medho and Raghu become street beggars; without getting the ‘puja’ from her subjects, the Goddess Kali become frustrated; poor milkman Haru got the power to raise voice against the oppression of the jamindar; the lesson of Truth and Non-violence gave the villagers the power to fight for justice; Bidhu Daroga became an entity of God to them; villagers started to violet the policy of the tyrant Jamindar; and all this lead to a climax where ill forces tried to punish Bidhu Daroga by hacking him to death.

But BIDHUNATH is not only an embodiment of Gandhian ideology, but at the same time a robin hood persona , whose heart bleeds to see his countrymen in dire straits fighting against poverty and the jamindars. Having complete faith in humanitarian motives, he believes in correcting criminals, not punishing them. While his pacifist presence in the village brings an end to the dacoits nexus, he also inspires people to fight, with non-violence against the feudal system prevalent in those times.

At the end, the power of non-violence remained triumphant over bloodshed. Having created Nischintipur a truthful, non-violent, sterilized village Bidhu Daroga suddenly disappeared with an aura of mystery. And a hearsay still goes thus: keeping a strict vigil on the village, Bidhu Daroga is still alive with his mystic power to protect the Human Race from untruthfulness and violence.

Gopal’s story ends. But it hurls a lot of questions to its present counterpart.
