Synopsis of the play

Paji Peter, based on the story of Sukumar Roy is a tale of an adolescent boy who used to trick people to look after his sister as they lost their parents. Once he thought to dupe the king of the state. The king accepted challenges and lost the game for several times.

But one day, Peter was caught by king’s men. The king wanted to drown him, but he escaped. After a couple of months, he ‘resurrected’ to deceive the king again. Knowing about a treasure island under the ocean from him, the king wanted to plunge into it.

The play ends with an ambiguity brimming on the king’s indecision whether to dive or not. And finally, we come to know that all the mischief done by Peter is to support some poor student philanthropically.

Thus the play becomes a riddle itself; who is the real hero – the king or Peter?

Director's Note

We are born from Sukumar Roy’s pocket. His ‘nonsense’ creates more sense and smart us to the great extent of humanity. On the verge of his death centenary, this is our tribute to him.

Bertolt Brecht calls Theatre as an entertaining and an educational media. It can make Education entertaining as well as the Entertainment, an education. This particular play helps our children have an impartial idea about black & white. And so to the whole process. Therefore, education becomes entertaining.

And thus, our endeavour is primarily meant for kids. We are supposed to be the only Group in Bengali theatre fraternity where elders are working for children so that, far from the madding crowd of too pragmatic people, they could find their realm in the land of imagination, music, colour and delight. Besides, the parents can find back their childhood in watching their once forgotten favourite being staged.
